Explore Underground River at Rio Secreto
Rainy day in Playa del Carmen? Perfect excuse to head underground. Seriously.
Rio Secreto is a cave with an underground river near Playa del Carmen where you can walk, wade, and swim among cool rock formations and fresh water.
It’s one of the most unforgettable and adventurous activity you can do when the weather’s not cooperating. You’ll be getting wet anyway, so why not right? Check for availability here!
Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum
Right on Fifth Avenue, this small museum gives you a peek into the life of one of Mexico’s most iconic artists, Frida Kahlo! You won’t find her original paintings here, but you can walk through colorful rooms that share her story. It’s an easy way to immerse yourself in Mexican culture.

Learn Mayan History at Choco-Story Playa del Carmen
Want a fun indoor activity that’s a little sweet? Check out Choco-Story Playa del Carmen.
This chocolate museum walks you through how cacao was used in ancient Mayan culture. You’ll learn how cacao was used in ceremonies, as currency, and finally turned into something we all love. The best part is the tasting at the end.
There’s even a 1 hour chocolate workshop for those of you that’ll love to mold and decorate your own chocolate! You’re required to book at least 1 day in advance for this class though.
Don’t worry souvenir shoppers, there’s a small shop where you can buy treats to take home!
Go to a Shopping Mall for Retail Therapy

When it rains in Playa del Carmen, retail therapy is a great backup plan.
Go shop to your hearts desire at Quinta Alegria. This shopping mall right in Fifth Avenue offers two shopping levels with big-name stores. Since it’s indoors, you can take your time without worrying about the weather.
Once the rain clears up, head over to Calle Corazon, an open air mall just a block away. There’s plenty of things to do there, from browsing boutiques to snapping photos by the colorful signs. It’s also a great spot to grab dinner or just people-watch at night when the vibe really comes alive.
Both shopping centers are fun to explore and a great way to spend the day even when it’s not raining.
Get a Massage at a Local Spa
If you’re wondering what to do in Playa del Carmen when it rains unexpectedly, here’s your sign to get a massage. Rainy days are the perfect excuse to slow down and treat yourself.
There are plenty of relaxing spas in Playa del Carmen where you can unwind. You have everything from deep tissue massages to facials. Some spots even include access to hot tubs and saunas.
Even if you haven’t been out exploring, you now have an excuse to an afternoon full of relaxation and reset. What’s a vacation without visiting at least one spa right?
Once you’re all relaxed and the sun comes back out, it’s the perfect time to hop over to Cozumel for a beach day or day trip adventure.
Explore Local Art at Gaston Charo Gallery
If you’re in the mood for something artsy, check out the Gastón Charó Gallery. It’s an art gallery between Calle 6 and 8 on 5th Avenue, where you’ll find plenty of unique artworks of over 40 artists. If you like it enough, maybe you’ll even bring one home.
It’s super easy to walk right past it since there’s no big storefront. Just look for the little walkway across from Hotel Lunata and follow it into the courtyard.
Going to the Movies at a Local Theater
Here’s another good option for a rainy day activity in Playa del Carmen: going to a movie theater! Watching a movie in another country is one of my favorite fun things to do. It feels familiar but just different enough to be exciting.
There’s two movie theaters you can choose from: Cinepolis in Plaza Las Americas or Cinemex in Centro Maya mall. The movie theaters here show the latest releases in English with Spanish subtitles, so you won’t miss a thing. The seats are cozy, tickets are affordable, and the snacks go way beyond plain popcorn.
That’s how I watched Spider-Man: No Way Home when it first got released. Talk about iconic.
