You’ve been dreaming of this trip to New York forever, and yet…it’s raining once you’re here. And now you’re left scrambling for things to do in NYC on a rainy day. Ughh.
But wait, before you think this trip is ruined, I got you. Just because the weather is bad doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. It’s actually the opposite.
New York is full of fun indoor activities, perfect for escaping the rain. There’s so many options to the point you might even be at a loss of which one to pick!
That’s why I’ve curated a list of rainy day activities that’s worth stepping out for. Let’s go!
Table of Contents
Interactive NYC Rainy Day Activities
If you’re visiting New York and don’t feel like just walking around, these are some of the best things to do when you want something more hands-on. They’re interactive and feel way more worth your time, especially on a rainy day.
SPYSCAPE
Are you a fan of crime shows or spy movies? Me tooo! Then you must check out SPYSCAPE in Midtown.
This place is built with input from REAL intelligence experts, which means you get challenges inspired by real CIA/MI6 cases! Here you’re dodging laser beams and cracking codes.
It’s the perfect hangout for a group, so come test your competitive skills. And at the end of all that fun, you even get a personalized spy profile!
I had way more fun here than I expected. So look into SKYSCAPE if you want something to keep you actively moving and engaged for a few hours on a rainy day in New York City.
Mercer Labs
Mercer Labs is a great pick if you’re into futuristic art, immersive spaces, or just want cool photo spots. The whole experience is built around 360° rooms with different themes. So you’re walking through light, sound, and digital projections instead of just looking at another plain exhibit.
I spent about 1.5 hours here going through every room. One of the coolest part is this space where you can turn your own drawing into a 3D animation. Kids love this! So even if you have kids in your group, you don’t have to worry about them being bored.
This attraction is in downtown Manhattan. Tickets are timed, so it’s worth booking in advance if you don’t want to wait.
Bagel-making Class
If you want something a little more hands on, a bagel making class at BagelUp is a really fun rainy day activity. The class runs about two hours and walks you through rolling, boiling, and baking your own bagels.
Once the bagels are freshly made, you get to eat it with different delicious spreads. There’s even enough for everyone to each take home half a dozen bagels. Breakfast solved!
Plus you get to learn about the history of bagels in New York City. All while sipping some champagne. So not only do you get to stay dry, you also get to do something unique to NYC. If this sounds like your kind of fun, it’s worth looking into ahead of time since classes run on a schedule.
Tea Around Town
If you want to see Manhattan but don’t want to walk in the rain, I got just the right activity for you. Tea around Town!
Exactly as the name sounds like, you get to spend 75 minutes on a double decker bus exploring Midtown all while enjoying afternoon tea. Look outside and you’ll see iconic landmarks like Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building. Without getting wet!
Food-wise, there are two menu: Petite or Luxe. Both are filled with savory bites, pastries, and scones. There is a bathroom on board, but it’s not always reliable, so if you’re like me and have a nervous bladder, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the bathroom break at Bryant Park.
Murder Mystery Shows
If you’re into role-playing, then murder mystery shows are for you.
It’s an immersive experience where you’re not just watching a performance. You’re part of the story, working with the actors to find out the true culprit.
I went to a show called The Art of Killin It in Brooklyn and had so much fun interacting with the cast. Sadly, it appears to no longer be running.
Now, if you’re short on time, you can always do a murder mystery dinner show! Two birds with one stone.
Escape Rooms
If you’re traveling with a group, look into escape rooms. You get one hour of pure fun with your friends, working together to solve puzzles and clues while racing against the clock.
Since there are escape rooms all over the five boroughs, it’s easy to find one near where you’re staying. And you get multiple themes to choose from: detective mysteries, horror, sci fi. You name it.
ARTECHOUSE NYC
ARTECHOUSE is located underneath Chelsea Market. In a converted boiler room! If you’re nearby when it’s raining, you can hideout from the rain for an hour here.
It’s an immersive art exhibit. That means each room has a theme and through projection mapping, light and sound it’s as if the whole space is moving around you.
Walk-in tickets are limited and more expensive. So if you’re a planner, get those tickets early.
Note: consider skipping this activity if you’re sensitive to flashing lights or loud sounds.
Night Activities For When it Rains
Rainy nights in NYC is when time feels like it has to slow down. Instead of rushing around, this is where you turn the night into something you’ll actually remember years from now. Take advantage of this rare moment, and truly immerse yourself.
Comedy and Stand-up Shows
I always think laughter makes a trip more memorable. And NYC has one of the best stand up comedy scenes to do just that.
Places like Comedy Cellar or Gotham Comedy Club run multiple shows every night, and big comedians still drop in to test their new material. If you don’t have stage fright, go sit in the front. You have a way higher chance of being pulled into the show.
You can keep this as a last minute option to escape from the rain or look up a club ahead of time if you have a specific one in mind.
Candlelight Concerts
Candlelight concerts are one of the coziest experience you can have when it rains in New York.
Most of these concerts are performed by small groups like string quartets in really unique NYC venues. Think historical churches. They’ve even hosted one at QC Spa before!
The entire place is filled with hundreds of warm LED candles, so you’re just surrounded by soft light while listening to live music.
Even if you’re not into classical music, don’t worry. They do tributes all the time to popular musicians like Taylor Swift, and movie soundtracks. There are usually multiple shows happening across the city, so you can pick one that best fits your plans.
Opera Performances
Just because the weather is bad doesn’t mean you can’t dress up for the night. If you want to feel fancy, you have to do an opera night. It’s one of the few places where people still like to dress up a bit, making it feel more like a proper night out.
If you haven’t been to an opera before, it’s a live performance where the story is told through singing. Mostly performed in Italian, French, or German. But don’t worry if you don’t speak those languages, because you have subtitles above the stage or in front of your seat, which makes it easy to follow along.
The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center puts on large scale productions with dramatic staging, and definitely worth checking out.
And if you’re worried it might be out of your budget, I got some good news. They offer same day rush tickets at a lower price, so you can experience it without breaking the bank. This is one of those experiences that’s worth doing at least once.
Museums That Are Always Worth It
What’s a trip to NYC without checking out some of the city’s best museums? For tourist and locals alike, museums are honestly one of the best ways to spend a rainy day in NYC. I mean, we got some of the best museums in the world here. And many of them got such a huge collection, you can wander around for days without seeing everything.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The MET is huge, and you could easily spend an entire day here. One minute you’re walking through ancient Egyptian temples, the next you’re looking at European paintings or medieval armor. If you want to learn more about each collection, the MET actually offers free guided tours throughout the day.
Since it is pay what you wish for New York residents, don’t be surprised to see locals taking refuge during the rain.
American Museum of Natural History
The American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is one of those places that’s just fun no matter how old you are. There’s dinosaurs, a planetarium, and… a giant blue whale hanging from the ceiling!
One of my favorite areas is the Spectrum of Life displays. You can see over 1500 specimens all in one space! It makes it so easy to compare the sizes and spot differences you wouldn’t normally notice.
The museum is huge. Five floors! So even if you spend the whole day here, you will not be able to see everything.
New York Transit Museum
The New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn is set inside an actual subway station that’s no longer in use! You can walk through old vintage subway cars from different decades and see how the system has changed over time. Like how cool is that!?
And since it’s not very big, you can explore everything in about an hour or two. If you want something different that still feels local, this is a really solid pick. You cannot get more NYC than this.
Food Halls You Can Wander for Hours
New York City has plenty of indoor food spots where you can grab something to eat, walk around, and easily spend a couple of hours without noticing the rain.
Chelsea Market
Chelsea Market, in the Meatpacking District, is one of the most popular indoor food courts in NYC. Can you believe more than 6 million people visited each year? So expect it to be bustling!
Not only that, it’s located inside a former Nabisco factory where OREO was invented! Yum.
So come hungry, because you’ll find everything from tacos to seafood to bakeries. Once you’re full, don’t forget to also check out ARTECHOUSE while you’re here!
Eataly
Eataly is where you go if you want to shop and eat everything Italian. The pasta is made daily and the cheese they sell is sooo good.
Here’s the fun part. They offer cooking classes if you want something more hands on. You get to learn how to make mozzarella, tiramisu, pasta. All kinds of Italian dishes, the list goes on.
I took a class here and learned how to make gnocchi (one of my favorite pastas) from scratch. I’m shocked at how easy it was.
If you love Italian food, make good use of a rainy day and come here! There are multiple NYC locations, so just head to the closest one near you.
Essex Market
Having been around since the 1940s, Essex Market in Lower East Side is New York’s most historic market. They are open 365 days of the year so you don’t have to worry about it being closed during your trip.
Compared to the other popular markets, this is less known and more local. It’s a great place to stop by if you’re exploring downtown and want something to eat.
Indoor Malls Worth Walking Through
New York City is full of indoor shopping malls. And what’s a better time to shop than when it’s raining? If your family back home asks why you came back with so many bags, tell them it’s raining so you HAVE to go shopping in NYC to escape the rain.
Hudson Yards
Hudson Yards is one of the newest neighborhood development in NYC. It’s right next to the Hudson River, and the 7 train will brings you straight here.
You have the Edge observatory deck, the Vessel, and the Hudson Yards shopping mall all in one area. So if the weather is good, you can see New York City from above! And once it starts raining, you can duck right into the shopping mall which is filled with high-end stores and restaurants.
Westfield World Trade Center (Oculus)
The Oculus is one of the coolest indoor spaces in NYC. The architecture is what makes it stand out, with this huge white ribbed ceiling. You’re often find pop-ups on the main floor or holiday markets during Christmas.
Inside, there are multiple levels of stores and food spots. And since it connects to several subway lines, it’s really convenient on a rainy day.
From the Oculus, you can head to the Brookfield Place through underground path for more higher end boutiques. It’s quieter and more relaxed here. The main highlight is the winter garden with tall palm trees and a glass roof, which makes it feel bright even when it’s gloomy outside.
Tangram Mall
Tangram Mall in Flushing is a newer spot that combines shopping, playing, eating all in one. It gives you a smaller scale version of what a shopping mall in China feels like, a place to socialize.
Just the food alone, regular shopping malls cannot compare. If you’re not too hungry, check out the food court for egg tarts, bubble tea, Bahn mi, and so much more. Or head to one of the restaurants for a feast. I’m talking wagyu barbecues, beijing duck..you get the clue.
If you love arcades or claw machines, there’s Gatcha where you can easily spend a few hours. It’s a bit further out in Queens, but worth it if you’re exploring beyond Manhattan.
Cozy Places to Slow Down
If you’re tired from walking around all day or just want a break, this is where you slow things down. These are the kinds of spots where you can relax, reset, and not feel like you have to be doing something the whole time.
Independent Bookstores
If you love books, why not head to an independent bookstore on a rainy day? Nothing compares to the vibe of the rain sounds outside while you slowly flip through an interesting book.
Hours can easily go by while you search for new books to add to your collection at home.
Some of the best ones to check out are The Strand Bookstore, McNally Jackson, and Housing Works Bookstore. Each one has a slightly different vibe, but they’re all good places to escape the rain, spend time indoors, and reset before heading back out out
Board Game Cafes
There are plenty of board game cafes in NYC, and they’re a really easy way to wait out the rain without feeling like you’re wasting time. You can grab a latte, rest your feet, and play a few games, which somehow always turns more competitive than expected.
Even if you’re alone, it’s easy to join another group at a table, which makes it a fun way to make new friends. It’s one of my favorite rainy day activities, and places like The Uncommons and Hex & Company are great spots to start if you’re in Manhattan.
Sound Bath Yoga
If you want something that feels really calming on a rainy day in NYC, try a sound bath yoga class! If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s basically a mix of light yoga and sound therapy using singing bowls and chimes.
To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect going in, but it ended up being one of the coziest things I’ve done in the city. The class at Sui Yoga & Spa started with a few light stretches and yoga poses, then the lights dimmed and we just laid there while the sound filled the room.
With the rain outside and the heat inside, everything felt extra calm. You kind of lose track of time, and by the end I walked out feeling way more relaxed.
Spa and Massages
It’s raining so it’s time for a spa and massage! You know, because it’s indoors. Wink wink. It’s a reset you need from walking around the city all day.
And even if it starts pouring without warning, you can always find a spa near you. Though depending on where you’re at, the price point can vary a lot. There’s the quick and affordable massage spots to more high end spas where you can stay longer and make it a full experience.
Making the Most of NYC on a Rainy Day
A rainy day in NYC doesn’t have to suck. Between museums, indoor markets, and interactive activities, there are plenty of fun things you can do to escape the rain. It’s also a great excuse to slow down, try something new, and experience a side of the city you might’ve otherwise skipped.
Whether it’s your first trip or you’ve been here before, these spots make it easy to still have a good day. Plan it right, and this might end up being one of the most memorable parts of your trip.
