Fun Ways to Explore a New Place
1. Take a Walking Tour
Cliche I know. But joining a walking tour is one of the best solo travel activities to get you settled in a new city. Whenever possible, I’ll join a walking tour of the city I’m visiting. Not only do you get to explore the city, you’ll also discover places you would have missed otherwise.
It’s also the best way to meet other solo travelers. Trust me, I’ve met so many cool people on these walking tours. More often than not, we’ll end up hanging out afterwards.

2. Do a Street Food Crawl
Ask a local and curate a list of local must-tries and go on your own food adventure. This is how you’ll find authentic food locals actually love. You can try one bite here, one dish there, and really taste the local cuisine.
Or just join a food tour where a local guide takes you to all the best restaurants and street food. Who knows, you might even leave with a few foodie friends.
3. Shop at a Local Grocery Store or Market
Curious about what locals actually eat daily? Browse the local grocery stores and the local market!
This is always a stop at the beginning of my trip. I’ve discovered so many snacks this way. In case of spontaneous purchases, I usually keep a portable tote in my purse.
4. Go on a Scavenger Hunt
It’s fun, it’s interactive, and it gives your day a purpose, even if it’s just following clues around the city.
In Park City, I did a scavenger hunt that had me exploring town for a solid 2-3 hours. I stepped into shops I probably would’ve missed and ended up learning so much about the local history.
5. Join a Meetup or Local Group
One of the easiest ways to meet people while traveling solo: meetup groups!
Sites like Meetup.com are great resources if you want to connect with people who share your interests, whether it’s hiking, photography, or board games.
Facebook groups are also your best friend! You can join destination-specific groups. It’s a great way to find pop-up events, fun activities, or just someone to grab dinner with.
For my girlies, there’s a group called Host a Sister. Need a place to stay or want to find someone to hang out with? Just post it to the group!
6. Track Down the Oldest, Biggest, or Tiniest Thing
Every destination loves to boast about the biggest or oldest something. The oldest shrine. The largest castle. The tiniest bookstore tucked in an alley. These kinds of oddly specific claims always get me curious.
If I see a sign that says “the first ever…” or “the world’s smallest…” you bet I’m checking it out. Like Moo Moo’s Creamery in Cold Spring, NY, which claims to be the world’s best ice cream shop. Was it? That’s up for debate, but it was definitely worth a stop.
Or heading to France just to check out the tallest sand dunes in Europe, Dune du Pilat!
Things to Do When You Have a Few Free Hours
7. Visit a Museum (Or Three)
Love history or art? Why not spend the day museum hopping? No one’s here to judge you.
I once visited three museums in a day in Hanoi! It sounds like a lot, but if you love soaking up knowledge at your own pace, it’s actually super enjoyable.
If you’re planning to go on an attraction spree, check if CityPass covers these museum entries. It can save you money and time.
8. Visit an Aquarium or Zoo
Who says zoos and aquariums are only for families? They are fun solo adventures too.
Grab a map and beeline to the most interesting creature there! Plus, you also get to learn about the native animals and fish of that region.

I could honestly spend hours just watching everything move around. In Chengdu, China, the zoo was a must-visit for me. PANDAS! It was adorable, iconic, and absolutely worth it.
9. See a Light Show
Looking for a solo activity at night? Check out the light shows.
The Lumina Enchanted Night Walk series is magical. I loved the Astra Lumina (when it came to NYC), and Onhwa’ Lumina in Quebec City tells the stories and traditions of the Huron-Wendat Nation.
These shows are immersive, peaceful, and perfect for solo travelers. Keep an eye out for upcoming events when planning your trip.
10. Take a Factory Tour
Factory tours are a fun way to go behind the scenes and learn how things are made. From rum and chocolate to gingerbread and tea, you’ll find all kinds of fascinating tours.
I’ve toured the Bacardi Rum Factory in Puerto Rico, visited a Gingerbread House Museum in Torun, Poland, and have my fill of ice cream in Tillamook Creamy in Portland.
Look up what’s available for your trip. Who knows, you might be surprised at what you find!

11. Become an Audience Member
If you’re visiting a city where they film TV shows, here’s a unique and super fun way to spend an evening. Be part of a live audience!
For example, if you’re visiting New York City, you can sign up for the ticket lotteries to shows like SNL or The Tonight Show. If luck’s on your side, you could be a part of the studio audience! Now that’s a travel story worth sharing!
12. Go to a Comedy Show
Sometimes you just need a good laugh, and a comedy show is the place to be. Whether it’s a big-name club or a local open mic, comedy nights are super easy to enjoy solo.
You don’t need to talk to anyone; just sit back and enjoy the show. Bonus points if you discover a rising star before they get famous.
Creative and Cultural Activities to Try Alone
13. Try a Cooking Class
Learn to cook a local dish! I’ve taken pastry-making classes in China and learned to make bagels in New York.
Not only is this one of the most memorable things you can do while traveling solo, now you can also make the dishes back at home.
And because everyone’s there to cook, it’s so easy to make friends. You already have a common topic to talk about, which makes conversation flow naturally.
14. Catch a Live Performance
Live shows are one of my favorite travel activities.
In Hanoi, there’s a traditional water puppet show. Although I did not understand a single word, it was still a rich cultural experience.
If you’re traveling to another country where you don’t know the language, just go for movement-based performances.

Cirque du Soleil shows are a must if they’re performing in the city you’re visiting! I first saw them in Las Vegas and was hooked by KA. No spoken words, just pure story through movement. JOYA in Mexico was just as stunning.
15. Send a Postcard to Yourself
One cool activity you can do alone?
Write yourself a postcard and drop it off at a local post office. By the time you’re home from your trip, it’ll be waiting for you with a unique stamp from that trip.
16. Try a Crafting Class
Whether it’s pottery, painting, or jewelry-making, these classes are perfect for unwinding and picking up a new skill. Don’t be afraid if you think you’ve got zero creative talent. That’s what the classes are for!
In China, I found a paint-your-own pottery workshop in a mall and ended up spending an afternoon painting a wisteria tree onto a cup. I had to go back to pick it up, but it’s still one of my most unique and personal souvenirs.
17. Go on a Tasting Tour
Are you big into wine or spirits? Embrace that freedom now that you’re traveling alone and plan a tasting itinerary! Visit as many vineyards as your heart desires.

In Portland, I got to two vineyards in a row while enjoying the scenery in between. The red wine in Archery Summit was so good!
18. Go Street Mural Hunting
If you enjoy art, street mural hunting can be one of the best ways to enjoy an afternoon alone. By wandering around and searching for colorful artwork, you’ve turned the city into a giant gallery.
19. Try a DIY Photo Shoot
You don’t need a travel buddy to take great photos. Set up a tripod or book a local photographer for a quick session.
I always bring this tripod with a Bluetooth remote so I can snap photos from far away! Some of my favorite travel photos were taken on these solo trips.
Once in Chengdu, a girl saw me taking photos alone and offered to be my photographer for an entire hour. It’s this kind of unexpected kindness that makes solo travel so special.
Outdoor and Active Solo Travel Activities
20. Go on a Scenic Ride
Hop on a short cruise to see the city from the water, take a train through the mountains, or try something unique like night rail biking under the stars. Going alone means you get all the say about which activity to do.
Scenic rides are among the easiest and most peaceful solo travel experiences. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy.
21. Hike a Popular Trail
If you’re in the mood for some nature, lace up your shoes and hit a hiking trail.
As a solo traveler, I always recommend picking popular trails where you’ll definitely see other people. You’ll feel safer, get to see some incredible views from the top, and get in a good workout all at once.
22. Join a Festival or Local Event

If your trip lines up with a festival or local event, don’t miss out! These rare moments are when both travelers and locals come together to celebrate.
When I first arrived in Paris, it just so happened to be White Night. An once a year all-night celebration full of art exhibits, music, and food.
It was such an epic start to my Paris trip! I spent the night hopping from one exhibit to the next and loved the energy of the city.
23. Enjoy the Sunset or Sunrise
Golden hour is magic. Find a rooftop, beach, or even a cliff and take in the magical view.
When I was in Taipei, I noticed a crowd gathered by the water, all quietly watching the sea. I joined them, waited for the sun to set, and ended up taking tons of silhouette photos with the locals. It turned into one of those unexpectedly perfect evenings.

24. Stargaze or Go to a Planetarium
If you’re visiting a place with dark skies, stargazing is the activity to do at night. Just lay back, look up, and take it all in. It’s one of those moments that makes you feel small in the best way.
And if the skies aren’t cooperating, head to a planetarium instead. In Salt Lake City, I spent a good few hours exploring Clark Planetarium and experimenting with all the hands-on exhibits.
25. Do an Outdoor Activity
Think horseback riding by the water, yoga on a paddleboard, or sunset kayaking. These are great ways to do something active while also enjoying the nature.
Tip: GetYourGuide and Viator are my go-to for searching activities!
26. Visit a Botanical Garden
Need a breather from sightseeing? Head to a garden instead. These calm, green spaces are a peaceful escape when you want to slow down and recharge.
And if you love taking photos, a botanical garden is the place to be. Bright flowers, unique plants, and pretty paths make the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot!
Wellness & Self-Care Solo Activities
27. Pamper Yourself at the Spa
Solo travel is the perfect time to pamper yourself with a spa day. Use this time to unwind with a massage or facial.
Whether it’s a full-on wellness center or a cozy local spot with foot massages and herbal soaks, it’s one of those relaxing activities that helps reset your energy and feel refreshed. Definitely worth the splurge!
28. Shop to Your Heart’s Desire
Shopping isn’t just for home. I love setting aside a day during my travels just for shopping because you’ll find styles and items you won’t see back home. Not just souvenirs, but pieces that remind you of the place.
I still wear the elephant-print dress I bought in Thailand. The material was unbelievably soft, and it brings back so many memories.
29. Chill at a Cafe
If you want downtime between attractions, visit a cozy cafe to recharge and rest.
While wandering around an ancient town near Chengdu, I stumbled upon a quiet cafe with second-floor seating. I ordered a drink, settled in my beanbag, and watched the world go by from the window. It’s such a simple way to slow down.
Tip: If you love to read, check out Kindle Paperwhite! It’s light to carry around, letting you read from anywhere.
30. Relax by the Water
If you’re staying near water, why not take advantage of it?
Lounge at a rooftop pool, chill by the lake, or head to a beach club for a drink with a view. A laid-back afternoon by the water is just as memorable.
The hostel I stayed at in Santorini even had a jacuzzi! There’s no doubt I took full advantage and spent every free night there.
This quick-dry travel towel is perfect for days like this and fits easily in your day bag.
31. Do What You Love
Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you have to stuff your itinerary full of things you wouldn’t normally do. It’s totally OK to stick to your regular routine.
If you love running every morning, go ahead and run, even while traveling. Start your day with a matcha latte? Head to a local cafe and do just that.
One of the best things about solo travel is the freedom to do anything you want. On your terms.
