Day 1 – Hotel Zone & Beach Day
Get ready to kick off your first day in Cancun by exploring the Hotel Zone and soaking up the sun on the beach as soon as you’ve settled in!
Cancun’s Hotel Zone is famous for its fancy resorts, lively parties, and breathtaking beaches. Stroll down the main strip of the Hotel Zone, known as Boulevard Kukulcán, and marvel at the incredible hotels that line the street..
And if you are near the Mayan Museum of Cancun (Museo Maya de Cancun), why not swing by and learn about some Mayan history?
In the afternoon, grab your beach essentials and head over to beautiful Cancun beaches, such as Playa Delfines or Playa Tortugas. Spend some time sunbathing on the soft white sands or take a dip in the crystal-clear turquoise waters.
End your day with a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants in the Hotel Zone. Whether you want Mexican or international cuisine, there are many choices available.
I highly recommend Restaurants Mextreme, a lively traditional Mexican restaurant. You won’t be there just for the food, but also for the vibes and dances.
Not ready to call it a day yet? Check out some of Cancun’s famous nightclubs, such as Coco Bongo, and immerse yourself in its energetic nightlife.
Afterwards, head back to your hotel to get some well-deserved rest before you exhaust yourself. Our exciting days in the city are just getting started!
Day 2 – Isla Mujeres & Snorkeling
Day two, let’s get going!
Jump on a ferry and embark on an exciting day excursion to Isla Mujeres, a little island situated just a short 15-minute ride off the coast of Cancun. With its compact size, you can easily explore the entire island in no time, making it an ideal choice for a day trip.
Exploring the island in a golf cart is one of the top activities to do on Isla Mujeres. Don’t forget to bring your driver’s license so you don’t miss out! Have a blast exploring the island!
Make sure you put these two stops down on your Isla Mujeres itinerary: the turtle santuary and the Temple of Ixchel, located at the farthest point of the island!
Can’t drive, that’s okay too! There are plenty of things to do on Isla Mujeres even without a car.
Join a tour for some epic diving in the Caribbean Sea!
The Manchones Reef is only 10 minutes boat ride from Isla Mujeres. Here you’ll find yourself in the enchanting underwater world of MUSA (Cancun Underwater Museum of Art). Take your pick of diving and swimming alongside colorful fish or snorkeling on the reef.
And when the sun sets, indulge in a sunset dinner with breathtaking views. Isla Mujeres has it all, from rugged adventures to serene moments. Just make sure to catch that last ferry back to Cancun!
Day 3 – Chichen Itza & Cenotes
Rise and shine! You’ll need to wake up extra early, for it’s going to be a long day.
Right in the heart of the jungle lies an ancient Mayan city, just waiting for you to explore. Chichen Itza is an absolute must-see on all first-time visitors’ itinerary. You definitely don’t want to miss out on it, especially if you are in Cancun for 5-7 days.
There are plenty of ways you can do this day trip. You can opt for a solo road trip, hop on a bus, or join a lively tour from Cancun to Chichen Itza. For more details, check out my comprehensive travel guide to Chichén Itzá!
Either way, prepare yourself for a mind-boggling experience. It’s like stepping back in time, except without the time machine. Prepare to spend at least 3 hours touring around the ancient Mayan ruins.
Don’t forget to drop by a cenote for a revitalizing swim before returning to Cancun.
Now that you’re back in Cancun, bet you’re starving! But don’t go into hangry mode just yet.
No matter where you’re staying, you can enjoy a delicious feast at the Brazilian steakhouse, Mr. Pampas. It’s conveniently located in both the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun. Not only that, this all-you-can- eat experience will cost you less than $30 per person!
Day 4 – Downtown Cancun & Cirque du Soleil
Let’s explore Cancun’s bustling downtown on day 4. Take a leisurely walk down Avenida Tulum, filled with an array of shops and restaurants.
Don’t miss out on Market 28, a vibrant handicraft market, perfect for souvenir shopping!
During the evening, locals gather at the Palapas Park for food and music. The night market is one of the best places in Cancun to experience local life. There’s also a circular ride that toys with human emotions by hanging you upside down in the air for a good minute.
But don’t end the day just yet. The highlight of this day is the Cirque du Soleil’s Joya show. Since it’s near Cancun, you can easily take a taxi over.
Witness the breathtaking acrobatics and spellbinding performances of this world-renowned circus. Snag a dinner & show combo ticket if you want to enjoy some fine dining before the show.
It bummed me out to miss the Cirque du Soleil’s Joya show during my first trip to Cancun. Which is why I made it a priority the second time around and even included it in this first-timer’s Cancun itinerary!
Day 5 – Cozumel & Submarine Ride
If you only have a 5 day trip to Cancun, get ready to wrap up your vacation with a bang by heading to Cozumel island for an unforgettable adventure!
Here’s a detailed guide if you help on how to get to Cozumel from your hotel.
Hop into the Atlantis submarine and embark on a breathtaking journey to the bottom of the ocean floor.
Fun fact: Less than 1% of the world’s population has ever experienced a submarine ride. Well, you’re about to become part of that exclusive group!
Be prepared to witness the most magnificent sights imaginable as you descend deeper into the unknown. From vibrant coral reefs to fascinating marine life, you will be able to see it all up close. There’s no better way to end your 5 days in Cancun than with this unforgettable submarine ride.
Looking to make your return trip a breeze? Cozumel’s got you covered with its very own international airport! Picture this: lounging on the stunning beaches of Cozumel, soaking up the sun before hopping on your flight. Sounds like the perfect way to this Cancun trip, right?
Otherwise, head back to Cancun. Since the submarine tours are early in the morning, you’ll have plenty of time to catch your afternoon flights.
Now if you got a week in Cancun, there’s still much to do!
Get ready to have a blast at the beach clubs on the west side of the island and enjoy some well-deserved down time! If you rent a car or moped, you can explore the whole of Cozumel!
Before you head back to Cancun, enjoy the evening in Playa del Carmen. Explore the shops and nightlife on Fifth Avenue.
Day 6 – Xcaret Park
Xcaret Park is another day trip from Cancun that you must put on your itinerary! This massive ecological park will take at least 2 whole days if you want to explore it completely. Regardless of who you’re traveling with, there’s something for everyone at Xcaret Park.
Begin your day by swimming through the refreshing underground rivers. Don’t worry if you can’t swim. There are life jackets and lifeguards, plus 5 exit points along the way. I can’t swim and still had a blast.
Enjoy the rest of the morning sunbathing on the beach (we’ll all know we’ll need to even out that tan from the past few days) or try out some exciting water sports.
When you feel your stomach growl, dry off and make your way to one of the many buffets available for a delightful lunch. Once you’re full, continue wandering through the Xcaret Park.
See the amazing marine life at the aquarium or dive deep into Mexico’s culture. Check out the history and traditions at the Folk Art Museum or the Mayan Village. Get up close and see wildlife, birds, and butterflies in their respective sanctuaries.
The day ends with an epic 2 hour cultural show!
With an all-inclusive ticket combo, you can make the most of your day. This incredible package provides round-trip transportation, lockers, buffet lunch–all in one!
Day 7 – Shopping & Bird’s-eye View
We’re back in the Cancun hotel zone for the last day of our 7 day itinerary. End the amazing week by spending the day treating yourself to some retail therapy at the many shopping centers. This is the perfect time to buy some souvenirs for your friends and family (and for yourself!).
Make sure you don’t miss out on the chance to see Cancun from above! Experience the thrill of parasailing or enjoy a ride on a Ferris wheel for a bird’s-eye view of the city. These are short activities you can easily fit into your last day in Cancun before your flight.
